The Hamptons are close to New York City on a map and far away on a summer Friday. The drive out on the Long Island Expressway can take more than three hours when traffic is heavy. The right way to go depends on your budget, the size of your group, how much luggage you carry and when you travel.
This guide compares the main options: the bus, the train, driving or a car service, and flying.
What Is the Best Way to Travel from NYC to the Hamptons?
Most travelers choose one of four options:
- Hampton Jitney. A scheduled coach service and the lowest-cost door-to-village option for solo travelers and couples.
- Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). Trains from Manhattan to stations in the Hamptons, with a taxi or pickup at the other end.
- Driving or a private car. The most flexible choice for families, groups and anyone with a lot of luggage, but the most exposed to traffic.
- Helicopter or seaplane with BLADE. The fastest option, with flights from $795 per seat.
If you can travel midweek or outside peak hours, every option gets easier.
How Long Does the Trip from NYC to the Hamptons Take?
| Travel method | Typical time | Approx. cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hampton Jitney | Depends on traffic and your stop | $43 prepaid, $51 on board (one way) | Solo travelers and couples |
| LIRR | Depends on the train and your station | Varies by ticket | Travelers who prefer rail |
| Private car | 3+ hours in heavy traffic | Varies | Families, groups, luggage |
| BLADE helicopter or seaplane | About 35 to 45 minutes | From $795 per seat | Speed and tight schedules |
Road times swing the most. On a summer Friday afternoon, the same drive that is easy on a Tuesday can stretch well past three hours. Flight time stays close to the same whatever the traffic below.
Hampton Jitney: The Most Popular Scheduled Option
Hampton Jitney runs scheduled coaches between Manhattan and stops across the Hamptons.

- Fares. On the Montauk line, a one-way ticket is $43 prepaid or $51 on board (fares effective June 25, 2026).
- Value Packs. A pack of 12 e-tickets costs $399, or $33.25 per ticket. Value Packs are nonrefundable, and the e-tickets are valid for three years.
- Reservations. You can reserve within three weeks of your travel date, and seats fill quickly on summer weekends.
- Boarding. Be at your stop at least 7 minutes before the scheduled departure. Bikes and surfboards cost $15 and ride in the luggage bay.
- Ambassador. Hampton Jitney also runs a premium Ambassador coach service.
The Jitney is the best value for one or two people traveling light. It still sits in the same traffic as every car on the road.
Is Chartering a Private Car, Bus, or Helicopter Worth It?
A private car or car service makes sense for families and groups. You leave when you want, you go door to door, and the luggage limit is the size of the trunk. Prices vary by company, vehicle and day, so get quotes for your dates. The catch is traffic: a car is the option most affected by a Friday rush.

A charter bus works for large groups such as wedding parties and company outings, when everyone needs to arrive together.
Flying with BLADE takes the highway out of the trip. BLADE offers scheduled by-the-seat flights, shared charters and private helicopter, seaplane and turboprop charters between Manhattan and the Hamptons, with lounges at both ends. Flights take about 35 to 45 minutes and start from $795 per seat. Destinations include Westhampton, Southampton, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island, East Hampton and Montauk.
Each aircraft type suits a different trip:
- Helicopter. Fastest access to the heliports. Best for East Hampton, Montauk, Southampton and Shelter Island, with short ground transfers.
- Seaplane. Water landings near bays and harbors. Ideal for Sag Harbor Bay or Shelter Island when you want to arrive close to the marina. Light luggage is recommended.
- Turboprop. Runway access and value for groups. Fly into Westhampton (Francis S. Gabreski Airport, FOK), then take a quick car transfer east. A strong option for families or teams with extra bags.
Which Travel Option Offers the Best Value?
- For one or two people on a budget: the Hampton Jitney, especially with a Value Pack if you go out often.
- For a family or group with luggage: a private car, split across the group, as long as you can travel outside peak hours.
- For anyone whose time matters most: a BLADE flight, which turns a drive of three hours or more into a flight of about 35 to 45 minutes.
Tips for Planning Your NYC to Hamptons Trip
Demand peaks on Friday late afternoon and evening heading out, and on Sunday afternoon and evening heading back. That is true on the road and at the heliports.

- Leave early on Friday. Morning or early afternoon departures avoid the rush.
- Come back late. Return Sunday night or early Monday to skip the post-weekend wave.
- Book holidays early. Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day fill early, so book those dates well in advance.
- Stay flexible on the landing spot. If your plans allow, fly into Westhampton (Gabreski) or Sag Harbor Bay and transfer to your final address.
- Reserve the Jitney early. Summer weekend coaches fill fast, so book as soon as your date opens.
