Getting between Manhattan and the airport is often the least predictable part of a trip. The same ride can take very different amounts of time depending on the hour, the day and the crossing. This guide compares every main option at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and Teterboro: public transit, shuttles, taxis, car services and helicopter transfers, with current fares where they are published.
Which NYC Airport Has the Best Ground Transportation?
Each airport has a different set of options. JFK and Newark both have an AirTrain that connects the terminals to the rail network. LaGuardia has no rail link at all, so every trip starts on a bus or in a car. Teterboro serves private flights, and ground transport there is arranged in advance.
The right choice depends on where you are going, how much luggage you have, and how much a delay would cost you. For more detail on choosing between the two airports BLADE serves, see JFK or Newark.
JFK Airport Ground Transportation
- AirTrain JFK. The AirTrain is free between terminals. It costs $8.75 when you enter or exit at Jamaica Station or Howard Beach Station.
- Subway. From Jamaica Station you can take the E, J or Z lines, and from Howard Beach the A line. Subway plus AirTrain comes to $11.75 one way.
- LIRR. The Long Island Rail Road runs from Jamaica to Penn Station, Grand Central and Atlantic Terminal for $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 peak. With the AirTrain, the trip costs $14 or $16.
- Taxi. Yellow and green taxis charge a flat $70 between JFK and Manhattan, plus surcharges. These include a $5 rush-hour surcharge on weekdays from 4 to 8 p.m. and congestion surcharges for trips into lower Manhattan.
For every JFK option in one place, see JFK to Manhattan and JFK Airport Transportation.
LaGuardia Airport Ground Transportation
LaGuardia has no direct subway or commuter rail connection. A planned AirTrain to LaGuardia was cancelled in March 2023.
- Q70 LaGuardia Link. A free bus to Jackson Heights and Woodside, where you can change to the subway or the LIRR.
- M60-SBS. A $3 bus between LaGuardia and Manhattan.
- Taxi. Taxis to and from LaGuardia use the meter, plus a $5 surcharge and other applicable surcharges.
- Shared shuttle. GO Airlink NYC runs shared rides between Grand Central and LaGuardia from $21 each way, with a standard fare of $35.
Newark Liberty International Ground Transportation
- AirTrain Newark. The AirTrain is free between terminals and links to Newark Airport Rail Station. The $8.75 AirTrain fare is included in NJ Transit and Amtrak tickets to the airport.
- NJ Transit. A train ticket from Newark Airport to New York Penn Station costs $17.25, AirTrain included. Cheaper combinations using PATH are also available.
- Taxi from Manhattan. NYC taxis to Newark use the meter, plus a $20 Newark surcharge, tolls and tip. There is no flat fare.
- Tolls. Driving into New York through the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel costs $16.79 at peak and $14.79 off-peak with E-ZPass.

Teterboro Airport Ground Transportation
Teterboro Airport in New Jersey is owned by the Port Authority and is used for private jet flights. There is no airline terminal and no public transit link, so plan your car service or helicopter connection with your charter operator before you land.
What Are the Main Types of NYC Airport Ground Transportation?

- Public transit. The lowest fares, but with transfers, stairs and luggage to manage.
- Shared shuttles. One fixed fare per person, with stops for other passengers.
- Taxis. Available at the curb. JFK has a flat fare to Manhattan. LaGuardia and Newark use the meter.
- Rideshare. Booked in an app. Prices rise with demand, especially when many flights land at once.
- Black car and private sedan. Booked ahead at a quoted price, with a driver waiting when you land.
- Helicopter transfer. BLADE offers flights between Manhattan and JFK or Newark in about 5 minutes.
How Much Does NYC Airport Ground Transportation Cost?
| Service Type | Published fare | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Subway + AirTrain (JFK) | $11.75 | Light luggage, flexible timing |
| LIRR + AirTrain (JFK) | $14 or $16 | A faster rail trip to JFK |
| NJ Transit (Newark to Penn Station) | $17.25 | Rail to and from Newark |
| Shared shuttle (GO Airlink, Grand Central to LGA / JFK) | From $21 / from $25 | Budget travelers |
| Taxi (JFK flat fare) | $70 plus surcharges, tolls and tip | Predictable ground cost |
| Rideshare and black car | Varies by provider and demand | Door-to-door travel |
| BLADE helicopter (Manhattan to JFK or Newark) | From $195 per seat | Time-critical trips |
Road fares are only part of the cost. Peak tolls, congestion pricing and time in traffic add up, and they are hardest to predict at rush hour.
Which NYC Airport Transfer Is Best for Corporate & VIP Travelers?
For a traveler on a tight schedule, the key question is how much a delay would cost. A pre-booked car gives you a driver at the curb and a known price. A helicopter transfer removes most of the road time.

On BLADE flights from the airport, a BLADE vehicle meets you at the arrivals terminal and drives you a short distance to your helicopter. You receive a text with your driver's contact details, the meeting point and the vehicle type before your plane reaches the gate. In Manhattan, BLADE uses lounges at the West 30th Street, East 34th Street and Wall Street heliports.
Beyond Ground: When Does a Helicopter Transfer Make Sense?
A helicopter transfer makes the most sense when road time is long and unpredictable, such as a weekday evening departure from JFK or a trip through the tunnels to Newark.

- Routes. BLADE's scheduled airport flights run between Manhattan and JFK or Newark. LaGuardia is available by charter only.
- Timing. The flight takes about 5 minutes. Seats start from $195.
- Luggage. By-the-seat flights allow one airline-size carry-on and one personal item per person, within a 25 lb limit. BLADE's partner Tote Taxi picks up and delivers checked-size bags in Manhattan below 90th Street, for $145 for two bags. Charters can carry extra luggage.
- Westchester. BLADE also offers flights between Westchester and JFK or Newark, from $225.
Tips for Choosing the Right NYC Airport Transportation Option
- Light bags and flexible time: use the AirTrain with the subway or LIRR at JFK, or NJ Transit at Newark.
- On a budget at LaGuardia: take the free Q70 bus to the subway, or a shared shuttle.
- Traveling as a group of four or more: a car service or SUV is often better value than several separate rideshares.
- Heavy luggage: book a car, or send your bags separately if you fly.
- Tight connection or a fixed meeting time: consider a helicopter transfer between Manhattan and JFK or Newark.
- Arriving internationally: allow extra time for immigration and customs before you plan your onward ride.

Bottom Line: NYC Airport Ground Transportation Options Compared
Every choice is a trade between cost, time and predictability. Public transit is the cheapest and depends on transfers. Shuttles save money and add stops. Taxis and rideshares are convenient, but their timing depends on traffic. Pre-booked cars give you a known price and a waiting driver.
When the road is the problem, BLADE offers helicopter flights between Manhattan and JFK or Newark in about 5 minutes, from $195 per seat, with lounges in Manhattan.
