What Is A Gulfstream G650 Jet?

What is the Gulfstream G650 jet?

The Gulfstream G650 is a large-cabin, ultra-long-range business jet built by Gulfstream Aerospace. Its type certificate designation is GVI. It is built for the longest private trips: intercontinental flights, flown nonstop, in a cabin set up for sleeping, dining and work.

Two Rolls-Royce BR725 turbofans power it, mounted on the rear fuselage. The flight controls are fully fly-by-wire. When it entered service, it was only the second fly-by-wire business jet, after the Dassault Falcon 7X.

History and development of the Gulfstream G650 jet

  • 2005: Gulfstream begins the G650 program.
  • 2008: The aircraft is revealed to the public.
  • November 25, 2009: First flight.
  • September 7, 2012: FAA type certification for the G650.
  • 2014: Gulfstream announces the G650ER, with extra fuel capacity for a range of 7,500 nm at Mach 0.85. An upgrade to ER standard was also offered for existing G650s.
  • 2019 onward: The G700, a stretched development with a new wing and Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines, takes over as Gulfstream's flagship. The G800 keeps a G650-size cabin with the newer wing and engines.

The G650 and G650ER were produced from 2008 to 2025, so every G650 you charter today is a pre-owned airframe. Interiors vary from one aircraft to the next.

Design and features

Interior and exterior design features

The cabin is 46 ft 10 in long and 6 ft 3 in high, with 2,138 cu ft of cabin volume and 195 cu ft of baggage space. Gulfstream marketed the G650 with seating for up to 18 passengers and 10 berths. The layout depends on how each aircraft was completed, so ask for the seating chart and photos of the specific aircraft you are offered.

The airplane itself is 99 ft 9 in long, with a wingspan of 99 ft 7 in and a height of 25 ft 8 in. The wing has a 36-degree sweep and winglets.

Range and speed

The range figure assumes Mach 0.85 with 8 passengers, 4 crew and NBAA IFR reserves. Flying faster, carrying more people or facing strong winds shortens it. For the longest routes, ask whether the specific aircraft offered is a G650 or a G650ER.

Avionics and safety measures

The G650's fly-by-wire controls have no mechanical link between the pilot's controls and the flight surfaces. Dual hydraulic systems move the surfaces. The aircraft shares its yokes and control column with the G550 so that pilots can hold a common type rating.

The certified maximum is 19 passengers, set by emergency exit requirements. Two pilots fly the aircraft, and Gulfstream's range figures assume four crew on board.

Owning a Gulfstream G650 jet

Owning a G650 means paying for the aircraft plus crew, hangar, insurance, maintenance and fuel. With production ended, buyers now shop the pre-owned market and compare airframe hours, maintenance status and interior condition.

Cost and financial considerations

Ownership costs depend on how many hours you fly, where the aircraft is based and how it is managed. If you need a G650 only a few times a year, chartering lets you pay for the trips you actually fly.

Tax and insurance implications

Tax treatment and insurance for a large business jet depend on the ownership structure, how the aircraft is used and where it is registered. Speak with an aviation tax adviser and an aviation insurance broker before you buy.

Maintenance, repairs, and upgrades

Like any large-cabin jet, the G650 follows a manufacturer maintenance program with scheduled inspections, engine care and avionics updates.

Is a Gulfstream G650 jet right for you?

Identifying your aviation needs and preferences

A G650 makes the most sense when your trip is long and your group is mid-sized: intercontinental distances, six or more passengers, or overnight flights where real beds matter. For a domestic hop with four people, a midsize or super-midsize jet usually costs less and does the job well.

Comparing with other jet options

Within Gulfstream's own range, the G650ER adds 500 nm, the G700 offers a longer cabin and more range, and the G800 pairs a G650-size cabin with the longest range of the family. If you are chartering, the right choice is the one that flies your route nonstop with your group and bags.

Consulting with experts in aviation industry

Share your route, dates and group size, and a charter specialist can tell you whether a G650 is the right fit or whether a smaller or newer aircraft will serve you better.
