What Is A Bombardier Global 5000 Jet?

Introduction to the Bombardier Global 5000 Jet

The Global 5000 is part of Bombardier's Global family of large business jets. It is a slightly smaller, shorter-range version of the Global Express, with a cabin 5.9 feet shorter than the Global 6000.

Bombardier announced the Global 5000 in October 2001 and launched it in February 2002. The first aircraft flew on March 7, 2003, and it entered service in April 2005. By 2018, 224 were in service.

Specifications and Performance of the Bombardier Global 5000 Jet

The Global 5000 shares its fuselage cross-section with the Challenger 600 and the CRJ regional jet, paired with a new wing and T-tail. It is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofans.

Early aircraft used Honeywell Primus 2000XP avionics. Since 2012, the Global 5000 has used the Bombardier Vision flight deck, based on Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion.

Range and Speed

  • Original range: 4,800 nm at Mach 0.85, with a 51,000 ft maximum operating altitude (EASA type certificate data)
  • After 2008: Bombardier raised the maximum takeoff weight to 92,500 lb, extending Mach 0.85 range to 5,200 nm
  • Long-range cruise: 5,000 to 5,400 nm

Actual range on the day depends on passengers, bags, winds and reserves, and the operator will confirm whether a route can be flown without a fuel stop.

Cabin and Comfort Features

The cabin carries between 8 and 19 passengers, depending on the layout. Seats convert to full beds, and there is an option for a private room at the back. The galley has room to prepare 16 five-course meals. There are forward and aft lavatories.

To make room in the cabin, Bombardier removed the crew rest area found on the Global Express, though it can be restored, and rearranged some avionics. The tail fuel tank was also removed, so fuel is carried in the wings.

Layouts vary from one aircraft to the next. Check the seat map, the sleeping arrangement and the connectivity with the operator before you book.

Purchase and Lease Costs

The Global 5000 was priced at about $40 million in 2008, and its unit cost was about $50.4 million in 2018. On the used market in 2018, early aircraft with Honeywell avionics sold for about $10 to $20 million, while aircraft with the post-2012 Vision flight deck fetched about $22 to $36 million. Treat these as historical figures, not a current quote.

Operating and Maintenance Costs

Fuel is the largest variable cost. At high-speed cruise, the Global 5000 burns about 5,000 pounds of fuel in the first hour, 4,000 pounds in the second and 3,000 pounds in the third, as the aircraft gets lighter.

Major maintenance adds up. A major inspection every 180 months has been reported at $800,000 to $1.2 million, and two engine overhauls at 8,000 hours can cost about $4 million. Factor in crew, hangar and insurance as well.

For occasional long trips, charter avoids those fixed costs. BLADE arranges private jet charters with licensed operators. Tell BLADE your route, date and group size, and compare the aircraft available.
