What Is A Citation Encore Jet?

Introduction to the Citation Encore Jet

The Citation Encore is the third step in Cessna's Model 560 line. The Citation V came first, in the late 1980s. The Citation Ultra followed in 1994 with more thrust and a glass cockpit. The Encore, announced at the 1998 NBAA convention, added new engines, new landing gear and an updated interior and systems.

Between 1989 and 2011, Cessna built 774 Model 560 aircraft across all versions: 262 Citation V, 279 Ultra, 168 Encore and 65 Encore+.

What is the Citation Encore Jet?

It is a straight-wing Citation sized for small groups. The cabin layout it builds on, from the Citation V, has a four-seat club, three more chairs and an enclosed, belted lavatory. The U.S. military also flies the Encore, as the UC-35B (Army) and UC-35D (Marine Corps).

Design and Construction

Compared with the Citation Ultra, the Encore brought:

  • New engines. Pratt & Whitney Canada PW535A turbofans rated at 3,400 pounds of thrust each.
  • Trailing-link main landing gear for softer landings, with the wheel track narrowed by 3.7 feet for better ground handling and easier crosswind landings.
  • Bleed-air de-icing on the wing leading edge.
  • Digitally controlled pressurization and improved brake modulation.
  • Redesigned interior fittings and seats with more seated headroom.

Cabin Features and Amenities

The Citation V cabin that the Encore builds on is 17.3 feet long, about 4.9 feet wide and 4.8 feet high, with a dropped aisle and seven windows on each side. Passenger service units spread airflow and temperature more evenly through the cabin.

Performance Specifications

  • Engines: two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW535A
  • Maximum takeoff weight: 16,630 lb
  • Maximum cruise altitude: 45,000 feet (FL450)
  • Certification: April 26, 2000

With the higher maximum takeoff weight, the Encore can carry five passengers with full fuel. The PW535A's stronger high-altitude thrust lets it climb faster and cruise higher than the Ultra.

The Citation Encore+

Cessna offered the upgraded Encore+ from 2007 through early 2010, after FAA certification in December 2006. It added:

  • PW535B engines with FADEC (full authority digital engine control)
  • Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics, with a center multifunction display and two primary flight displays
  • A range of 1,800 nautical miles at 390 knots true airspeed
  • A takeoff distance of 3,520 feet in standard conditions
  • A direct climb to 45,000 feet in 27 minutes

Typically equipped, it carries 850 to 1,170 pounds of payload with full fuel. It can be flown by one pilot, but most are operated with two.

Comparison with Other Private Jets

These comparisons are drawn from a 2018 Business & Commercial Aviation review of the Encore+:

A light business jet with its airstair open on an airport apron at dusk.
  • Citation CJ3: better fuel efficiency and runway performance, but a shorter cabin.
  • Learjet 45XR: cruises faster and carries more, but needs longer runways and burns more fuel.
  • Citation CJ4: better payload and range, but more expensive.

The later Model 560 versions are the fastest and longest-range jets built under the original Citation 500 type certificate.

What a Citation Encore Costs

In December 2018, an Encore+ was valued at $3.4 million to $3.8 million. Prices for any used jet depend on its year, hours, maintenance status and equipment, so check current listings.
